Creating a job specification Print E-mail

The job specification answers the question: "What human traits and experiences are required to do this job well?

It is based on the job description and contains what is expected from the new employee or from an internal job applicant.

The job specification may be a separate section of a job description, or may be an entirely separate document.

It contains the information as follows:
   - education
   - skills, training
   - intelligence
   - work experiences
   - length of previous service
   - abilities
   - personality, behavioral expectations
   - competence
   - other expectations

When reading a good job aid, among the expectation we will find the elements of the job specification.

In a job specification you can define the level of expectation, and the future development direction as well.
Example: expected level: speaking a foreign language in social situations, future development: speaking the language in business situations.

Why is it important to create the job specification?

Job specification serves as a guideline for the recruitment processes, serves as a base for the developmental part of the performance appraisal and  for development planning.
