Dr. Robert Vallerand, Ph.D., is a professor of psychology at the Université du Quebec à Montréal, a social psychologist, and an IPPA Board Member. For the past two decades, he has studied the causes and consequences of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Based on his research, he developed a Hierarchical Model of Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation. He has written numerous research articles highlighting his work and has presented his findings at various conferences throughout the worldMore recently, he has turned his attention towards the intriguing concept of passion and is a pioneer in the field. When we think of passion, many of us may think that more is better. However, Dr. Vallerand explains that it is not how much but rather the right kind of passion that is key for increased satisfaction in life and love.
He identifies two types: obsessive passion – where the passion controls the person – and harmonious passion – where the person controls the passion. A harmonious passion towards an activity or loved one has psychological and physical benefits over an obsessive passion, which can be destructive. Along with his colleagues, he developed The Passion Scale to measure both harmonious and obsessive passion. It contains 2 subscales of 6 items each and has been validated with respect to a number of activities and life contexts. It is available through his website (www.psycho.uqam.ca/lrcs).Dr. Vallerand just completed a chapter on his “Dualistic Model of Passion” (DMP), which will be featured in Advances in Experimental Social Psychology, and is currently examining how passion towards our romantic partners may encourage change for the better. Here are some highlights of Dr. Vallerand’s fascinating research on passion:
